This week we had a couple warm days. When we are lucky enough to have weather like this we like to open up the hives and see how the girls are doing. On this check we wanted to make sure they have enough food, look for moisture, and the biggest thing we did was add some pollen. In our area of Northern NY we have a very short bee season. Many places in the US are already bringing in pollen and are in full swing of building up bee numbers. To combat this for ourselves we add pollen back to the hives now. This will tell the bees it's ok to start laying new bees and start the buildup for the next season.
It was nice to have a visit with the girls and they seem to be doing well. They were all happy to start munching on the pollen treats placed in the hive. At this point we hope to leave them on their own for a few weeks. We will be looking to get into the hives around the first of April to do the spring hive cleaning and get them ready for splitting the hives in May. This will give us a bit of time between now and then to get some new equipment ready for the spring boom.
